Screening of Uesugi’s film Melancholia – A Portrait of M will take place at Vestfold Kunstsenter Friday 4th and Saturday 5th of November at 12 and 2 PM.

Filmvisning av Mitsuyo Uesugis film Melancholia – A Portrait of M etterfulgt av samtale om to kvinners kunstnerskap/deres sceniske møte – Mitsuyo Uesugi og Janne Hoem. Kurator Mai Burns (UK) deltar i samtalen. Samtalen vil foregå på engelsk. 

Born in 1950 in Fukuoka, Japan. Studied classical ballet at a young age, and moved to Tokyo in 1967. Began studying under Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno in 1970, performing in his film Mr. O’s Book of the Dead in 1973. She began pursuing her own form and performed her first Butoh solo, Guren-yakyoku, in 1975. In 1980, she performed in Kazuo Ohno’s European tour of Ozen. She has performed numerous times both in Japan and abroad, and has collaborated with French dancers, musicians and theatre makers. She continues to explore the depths of her body in her works. Performed her Butoh piece Labyrinth Legend at Terpsichore in Nakano, Tokyo in 2020. Received the Dance Critics Society of Japan Award for her performance Baby Melancholia—Dream of Six Nights in 2009.
