APARTE is proud to announce that Swedish artists Leif Elggren and Carl Michael von Hausswolff are appointed this year’s artists-in- residence at APARTE FESTIVAL 2022. Elggren and Hausswolff are invited to do a performance and exhibition – the inauguration of the Elgaland-Vargaland consulate in Tønsberg at Haugar Vestfold Art Museum during this year’s festival, as well as artist talk.
Elgaland-Vargaland is an art project that incorporates all boundaries between other nations as well as Digital Territory and other states of existence. The Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland [KREV] were proclaimed on May 27th 1992. Various sections and aspects of life were annexed and proclaimed as the territory of the infant state. Elgaland-Vargaland consist of all Border Territories: Geographical, Mental & Digital. Every time you travel somewhere, and every time you enter another form, such as the dream state, you visit Elgaland-Vargaland. In its 30-year of existence, the project has – through its humorous approach to various government functions – opened a number of relevant questions: what does it mean to be a member of a nation, who has the right to occupy private parts of one's life and mind, how far does political power reach, etc.
Hausswolff and Elggren print their own currency, official stamps and issue passports to new citizens, as well as establish Elgaland-Vargaland embassies and consulates all around the world, which they will do at Haugar Art Museum in Tønsberg during APARTE festival 2022.
This program is made possible by the generous support of the Arts Council Norway. It´s ambition is to establish international collaboration with artists, curators and producers all over the world, and this project will be the fist step in this direction.

Aparte har invitere kunstnerduoen Carl Michael von Hausswolff og Leif Elggren til et kunstneropphold i Tønsberg i tilknytning til gjennomføringen av Aparte festival 2022. Festivalen har som ambisjon å etablere internasjonale samarbeid med kunstnere, kuratorer og produserende miljøer i Europa. Hausswolff og Elggren har solid internasjonal kunstnerisk erfaring og nettverk, og kan bidra til å styrke og utvide programtilbudet til festivalen.
Carl Michael von Hausswolff gjestet Aparte festivalen med en performance og videoarbeid i 2021, og etter dette besøket oppstod ideen om et videre samarbeid. I samarbeid med Aparte vil Hausswolff og Elggren utvikle en stedsspesifikk performance knyttet til konseptkunstverket Kongerikene Elgaland-Vargaland. Prosjektet leker med tanken om nasjonalstaten og en verden hvor grenser mellom ulike land er utvisket. Alle som ønsker er velkomne til å søke om statsborgerskap i Kongerikene Elgaland-Vargaland og alle avdøde personer får automatisk innvilget statsborgerskap. På et eksistensielt nivå tar prosjektet tak i spørsmål knyttet til ulike undersøkelser av identitet og individet/ samfunnets forhold til verden.
Formålet med artist-in-residence programmet er å fremme god dialog, faglig utvikling og deltakelse i utviklingen av et bredere kunstfaglig samarbeid med internasjonale partnere. Samarbeidet med Hausswolff og Elggren vil også bidra i festivalens arbeid med utvikling av en strategi for arbeid med internasjonale aktører. Programmet er støttet av Norsk Kulturråd.
